Thanks to Patrick for pointing me toward this terrific quote from Gen. Eric Shinseki, whom President-elect Barack Obama has selected as his Secretary for Veterans AffairsGen. Shinseki is an Army four-star general who earned two Purple Hearts during his two tours in Vietnam.
According to Gen. Shinseki, leadership begins with a love for those you're leading:
"You must love those you lead before you can be an effective leader. You can certainly command without that sense of commitment, but you cannot lead without it. And without leadership, command is a hollow experience, a vacuum often filled with mistrust and arrogance."
